Malibu, CA (PRWEB) January 06, 2014

On December 16th, Northwestern University released details of a medical study that examined frequent marijuana use and its effects on the teenage brain. The results revealed that teenagers who smoked marijuana everyday for three years showed abnormal changes in their brain structure, and demonstrated poorly on tasks requiring memory-based skills.

The changes in brain structure were recorded two years after the tested teens stopped smoking marijuana, indicating the potential for longer term effects of the drug.

Recently marijuana initiatives in the states of Washington and Colorado have resulted in new voter-backed laws that allow for the personal consumption of recreational marijuana.

The study also showed that the younger an individual was when they began smoking marijuana, the more abnormalities were present. The study suggests that the effects of marijuana on young normal brains result in brain activity in the subcortical grey matter comparable to schizophrenia.

We oppose the legalization of marijuana because, in our experience, it often leads to dependence on other drugs, said Pax Prentiss, CEO of Passages Addiction Treatment Centers. At Passages, weve developed an effective treatment program that helps individuals return to their daily lives, drug-free.

At Passages Malibu – Addiction Ends Here

About Passages Malibu & Passages Ventura:

Father and son team Chris and Pax Prentiss founded Passages Malibu in 2001. Its second location, Passages Ventura, first opened its doors in 2009. The two alcohol & drug abuse treatment centers offer an alternative to the 12 step/AA model of addiction treatment by utilizing a holistic program that focuses on the underlying issues of substance dependency, rather than attributing addiction to an incurable disease.

Both Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura accept insurance and each have earned the coveted Joint Commission (JCAHO) accreditation, which has only been given to 6% of the nations behavioral health treatment programs.

Passages Malibu was named the #1 treatment center in the world by Healthcare Global, one of the “Most Luxurious Places to Dry Out” by Forbes magazine, and the Huffington Post recently acknowledged Passages as a center that caters to a high-end crowd, with many CEOs, entrepreneurs and high-powered professionals among its clients.

The co-founders are also authors of an acclaimed series of addiction treatment books, including their groundbreaking, flagship title, The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure.
