On December 16th, Northwestern University released details of a medical study that examined frequent marijuana use and its effects on the teenage brain. The results revealed that teenagers who smoked marijuana everyday for three years showed abnormal changes in their brain structure, and demonstrated poorly on tasks requiring memory-based skills.
The changes in brain structure were recorded two years after the tested teens stopped smoking marijuana, indicating the potential for longer term effects of the drug.
Recently marijuana initiatives in the states of Washington and Colorado have resulted in new voter-backed laws that allow for the personal consumption of recreational marijuana.
The study also showed that the younger an individual was when they began smoking marijuana, the more abnormalities were present. The study suggests that the effects of marijuana on young normal brains result in brain activity in the subcortical grey matter comparable to schizophrenia.
